Kalalau Lookout – Stunning Napali Coast Views

the-island-of-kauai-

Kauai is a beautiful island that has spectacular views almost everywhere you look. But, if you are looking for an extraordinary view then you need to visit the Na Pali Coast Kalalau Lookout.

This lookout is located on the west side of Kauai and offers visitors a spectacular view of Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast. The lookout is especially beautiful during sunset when the sky turns a deep red and orange. But, the risk of cloud cover during the afternoon and evening is high. To help ensure a clear view, we recommend visiting the lookout in the morning between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

To get to the lookout when starting in Waimea, travel up State Highway 550. It is a 17-mile journey, but will probably take you 45 minutes by car. When you reach Kalalau Lookout, you will be at 4,000 feet above sea level. This just so happens to be the highest elevation on Kauai that can be reached by road travel.

Once at the lookout you will be looking into Kalalau Valley, which is part of the famous Waimea Canyon. This dramatic valley has been the backdrop for many famous movies such as “Jurassic Park”, the original “King Kong”, “Six Days Seven Nights” and “Mighty Joe Young”.

Visit Along the Kalalau Trail

The Kalalau Trail is also located in this valley and is one of the most popular hiking trails on Kauai. The 11-mile trail takes you from Ke’e Beach to Kalalau Beach, which is only accessible by foot or by boat. It is estimated that over 500,000 people a year explore this incredible trail. The trail is a bit challenging for beginner hikers, so if you decide to choose this adventure, be prepared physically and with appropriate gear.

Remember to do your research before starting a hike of this length!
